Jet lag and shift work: moving your sleep a step at a time

With jet lag or night shifts, the clock on the wall and the clock in your body disagree. Nothing fixes that overnight, but Wakira can make it easier. It moves your sleep before you fly, suggests alarms from your calendar, and keeps shift nights apart from your ordinary ones.

Getting ahead of jet lag before you fly

When something in your calendar for the next seven days looks like a flight, Wakira asks "Is this a flight?" and lets you choose the destination from 51 cities, one for each time zone. Nothing happens unless you say yes, and nothing is written to your calendar.

Wakira screen, with example data: a card asking "Is this a flight? Sunday 09:40" for a flight to London, with "Yes, to London", "Somewhere else" and "No".

One hour a day

Say yes and a plan of up to three days appears, one hour a day. Flying up to seven hours east? You go to bed earlier and are offered an earlier alarm. Flying west, or further east? Only your bedtime moves, and it moves later.

An hour a day doesn't finish the adjustment; it gets it started. If the difference is under two hours, or you're back within two days, it tells you no plan is needed. No pills, no supplements: just when to sleep and when to get up.

Wakira screen, with example data: "Day 1 of 3 before the flight: bed at 22:15 and up at 06:00, an hour earlier than usual", with the buttons "Set the 06:00 alarm" and "Not this time".

Shift work

For night shifts, early shifts, 24-hour shifts and reserve duty. Fill in the next two weeks with a tap on each day, copy last week, or bring shifts in from your calendar. There are ready-made kinds of shift (morning, evening, night, early, day and 24 hours), or you can set your own hours.

Your shifts come with suggestions: an alarm before an early shift, and a ninety-minute nap, with an alarm to end it, before your first night shift. During the shift and the sleep after it, the app's notifications stay quiet.

Sleeping after a night shift

You're offered an alarm for the sleep afterwards, and the bedtime card says "Night shift tonight" and shows when to sleep.

Wakira screen, with example data: the bedtime card, "Night shift tonight", with the day sleep after it from 07:00 to 14:30 and the buttons "Night mode" and "The alarm".

A shift night doesn't count as a bad night

Shift nights are never counted with your ordinary ones. So a night at work never looks like a failure, and your usual figures stay honest: how long you usually sleep and when you go to bed, without a week of shifts throwing them off.
